Del Amitri formed in Glasgow in 1980 around songwriter Justin Currie, whose account of the name is refreshingly unromantic: a corruption of "Dimitri", half-remembered from a film's closing credits in 1979, and emphatically not Greek for "from the womb". Signed to Chrysalis, they released their debut in 1985, but it was 1989's Waking Hours that made them, reaching number 6 in the UK and yielding "Nothing Ever Happens". "Roll to Me" reached the top 10 in both Canada and the United States in 1995. Five of their seven studio albums have reached the UK top 10, and they have sold over six million albums worldwide.
