A Grade II-listed live venue at 568–578 Christchurch Road in Bournemouth, Dorset, opened in 1895 as the Grand Pavilion Theatre. Renamed the Boscombe Grand, then the Boscombe Hippodrome for over 50 years, and later The Royal Ballrooms, it hosted Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie and more through the 1960s and early 70s, and remains a live entertainment room. Del Amitri formed in Glasgow in 1980 around songwriter Justin Currie, whose account of the name is refreshingly unromantic: a corruption of "Dimitri", half-remembered from a film's closing credits in 1979, and emphatically not Greek for "from the womb".
