The Usher Hall is a Category A listed concert hall in the West End of Edinburgh, Scotland, opened in 1914 and seating around 2,200 in its domed auditorium. Owned by the City of Edinburgh Council, it has staged concerts for over a century, hosted the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest, and remains a leading venue for classical and popular music. Del Amitri formed in Glasgow in 1980 around songwriter Justin Currie, whose account of the name is refreshingly unromantic: a corruption of "Dimitri", half-remembered from a film's closing credits in 1979, and emphatically not Greek for "from the womb".
