Glasgow Royal Concert Hall stands at the junction of Buchanan Street, Sauchiehall Street and the former Parliamentary Road, and forms part of a complex that includes the Buchanan Galleries. It opened in 1990, for Glasgow's year as European City of Culture, and was formally opened that October by the Princess Royal; the Scottish National Orchestra gave the first performance. Its Main Auditorium seats 2,475, with a 500-capacity Strathclyde Suite and smaller foyer spaces alongside it, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra's own 600-seat hall is entered from Killermont Street. The hall is owned by Glasgow City Council and run by Glasgow Life, books pop and rock as well as classical, and is the main venue for Celtic Connections. Del Amitri formed in Glasgow in 1980 around songwriter Justin Currie, whose account of the name is refreshingly unromantic: a corruption of "Dimitri", half-remembered from a film's closing credits in 1979, and emphatically not Greek for "from the womb".
