Glasgow's sprung-floor ballroom under a neon starburst sign, routinely named by artists as the best crowd in Britain. The Barrowlands roar is a rite of passage. Del Amitri formed in Glasgow in 1980 around songwriter Justin Currie, whose account of the name is refreshingly unromantic: a corruption of "Dimitri", half-remembered from a film's closing credits in 1979, and emphatically not Greek for "from the womb".
