Blackpool Opera House is a 2,813-seat theatre inside the Winter Gardens complex in Blackpool, England, and one of the largest theatres in the United Kingdom. The current building opened in 1939 and hosted the first Royal Variety Performance staged outside London in 1955; today it presents touring musicals, variety and concerts. Del Amitri formed in Glasgow in 1980 around songwriter Justin Currie, whose account of the name is refreshingly unromantic: a corruption of "Dimitri", half-remembered from a film's closing credits in 1979, and emphatically not Greek for "from the womb".
