The room
Metro is a 1,100-capacity concert hall at 3730 N Clark Street in Wrigleyville, Chicago, two blocks north of Wrigley Field, with its audience divided between a main floor and a balcony. It opened in 1982 in the Northside Auditorium Building, put up in 1927 as a Swedish community centre, and traded first as Stages Music Hall and then, until 1992, as Cabaret Metro. Joe Shanahan, who created the club in the late 1970s, is its owner; it began with local bands such as Naked Raygun and Big Black, quickly added national ones including Sonic Youth, the Ramones and Metallica, and in the 1990s Material Issue, Smashing Pumpkins, Urge Overkill, Liz Phair and Veruca Salt all began their careers there. Metro still plays host to local, regional and national emerging bands, and bills itself as "Your Home For Independent Live Music Since '82". It is general admission and standing room only: two flights of stairs reach the floor and two more the balcony, 41 steps in all, so the room is not wheelchair accessible. Its own box office at 3728 N Clark Street is open Monday to Saturday and takes cash or card, with no service fee on cash. Underneath the hall, in the same building, is smartbar, Metro's 400-capacity sister nightclub, which is 21+ at every event. Our 15 listings for the room between 18 September and 20 November 2026 include PUP with Destroy Boys, Alkaline Trio, Stabbing Westward, Boy Harsher, Rocket from the Crypt, Whitney, The Afghan Whigs and Protomartyr.
