Commodore Ballroom

The Commodore Ballroom is a music venue, dance floor and nightclub at 868 Granville Street in Vancouver, British Columbia, built in the Art Deco style of the late 1920s and opened in December 1929 as the Commodore Cabaret. Its best-known feature is the sprung dance floor, whose horsehair lining absorbs, rather than reflecting back, some of the impact of dancers' feet; the general-admission ballroom holds about 990 people across standing room and table seating. The room closed in 1996 and reopened on 12 November 1999 after C$3.5 million of renovations, including a new hardwood dance floor, and is owned by Live Nation. Billboard named the Commodore one of North America's ten most influential clubs — the only Canadian venue, and the oldest venue, on that list. Its calendar now runs to touring bills from acts such as UB40, Peter Hook & The Light and Beth Orton.
