Steven Patrick Morrissey, born on 22 May 1959 to working-class Irish immigrants in Old Trafford and raised in Stretford, came to prominence as the frontman and lyricist of the Smiths, whom he formed with Johnny Marr in 1982 and who lasted until 1987. His music is characterised by a baritone voice and lyrics of emotional isolation, sexual longing, self-deprecation and dark humour. His solo career began with Viva Hate in 1988 and has run through Vauxhall and I, You Are the Quarry, Low in High School and Make-Up Is a Lie. He is credited as a seminal figure in the emergence of indie pop, indie rock and Britpop, and has been a polarising one throughout.
