It holds 5,000, hosts the UK party conferences, and has doubled as one of the south coast's main touring stops since the day it opened. Steven Patrick Morrissey, born on 22 May 1959 to working-class Irish immigrants in Old Trafford and raised in Stretford, came to prominence as the frontman and lyricist of the Smiths, whom he formed with Johnny Marr in 1982 and who lasted until 1987.
