Kristin Hersh was given a guitar at nine and had talked her best friend Tanya Donelly into starting a band by fourteen; Throwing Muses followed in 1981, while both were still at high school in Newport. She has since released eleven solo albums alongside the Muses and 50FootWave, with a guitar style that runs from jaggedly dissonant to traditional folk and lyrics written in a stream of consciousness drawn from her own life. She studied archetypal psychology and philosophy at Salve Regina University and left shortly before graduating to put the band on the road.
