About
Donny Benét is the persona of Sydney musician Benjamin Waples, who played double bass in jazz bands and synths and accordion in Italian bands around the city before stepping out alone. He has said the character grew out of watching an Italian accordionist perform in nursing homes; his father, Antonio Giacomelli Benét, was an Italian disco accordionist who taught him accordion and electric bass. Recording at his own Donnyland Studios, he signed to Rice is Nice and released Don't Hold Back in 2011. His fifth album, Mr Experience — which he described as envisioning the soundtrack to a dinner party set in the late 1980s — reached number 26 on the ARIA Charts in May 2020.
