Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre stands at 2800 Cobb Galleria Parkway in the Cumberland/Galleria edge city of northwest Atlanta, on the east corner of Akers Mill Road overlooking I-75. The 145 million dollar building, designed by Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart & Associates, held its grand opening on 15 September 2007 with a concert by Michael Feinstein and Linda Eder, and is owned and operated by the Cobb-Marietta Coliseum & Exhibit Hall Authority. At its core is the 2,750-seat John A. Williams Theatre, built to take touring Broadway companies, with seating on orchestra, mezzanine and grand tier levels plus fourteen balcony boxes and no seat further than 160 feet from the stage. The Atlanta Opera and Atlanta Ballet are its resident companies. The Atlanta Opera was founded in 1979 and stages four mainstage productions a season at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, its principal house since 2007, alongside smaller-scale work and programmes in education, artist development, film and new work.
