The Atlanta Opera was founded in 1979 and stages four mainstage productions a season at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, its principal house since 2007, alongside smaller-scale work and programmes in education, artist development, film and new work. Tomer Zvulun has been general and artistic director since 2013, and under him the company has launched its Discoveries series, the Studio Artists programme, a Film Studio and the New Opera Works Festival. In 2024 Opera America placed it among the ten largest opera companies in the United States, its annual operating budget having reached $15 million.
