About
the olllam is a Transatlantic collective whose name derives from the old Irish for a grand master of a skill, marrying instrumental virtuosity, Irish tradition and Detroit's post-rock psych-sensibility in genre-defying compositions lush with cyclical, trance-like melodies. They are co-written by Belfast uilleann piper and whistle player John McSherry, his US protégé Tyler Duncan and master-drummer Michael Shimmin, and underpinned in recording by the bass playing of Joe Dart of Vulfpeck. The 2012 eponymous debut won that year's Indie Acoustic Music Award for Best Instrumental Album, and 2022's elllegy saw the olllam named RTE Radio Best Group at that year's Folk Awards. Since 2024 the line-up has featured Seán O'Meara, Joe Hettinga and Ross Ainslie.
