The Mavericks are an American band formed in Miami, Florida, in 1989 and long led by singer and guitarist Raul Malo, whose rich, vibrato-laden voice defined their sound until his death in 2025. They blended country with rock, pop, Latin and Tejano flavours and 1950s balladry, becoming one of the more distinctive acts to emerge from early-1990s Nashville. The 1994 album What a Crying Shame went platinum in the United States, and the group won a Grammy for 'Here Comes the Rain' along with Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music honours. Renowned for their exuberant, dance-inducing concerts, they have toured widely across North America and Europe.
