The Chicks — Natalie Maines and the sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer — began in Dallas in 1989 as the Dixie Chicks, busking and working the bluegrass festival circuits and small venues for six years with a different line-up. Maines replaced Laura Lynch in 1995, and Wide Open Spaces and Fly were both certified diamond. In 2003, from a stage, they publicly criticised President George W. Bush, triggering a backlash that damaged sales. They reunited for touring in 2016, removed "Dixie" from the name in 2020 over its connotations, and released Gaslighter, their first album in fourteen years.
