The Black Keys are an American rock duo formed in Akron, Ohio, in 2001 by guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney, who had known each other since childhood. Steeped in blues, garage and punk influences, they built a following through basement recordings and small-club tours before breaking through with Brothers (2010) and El Camino (2011), the latter reaching number two on the Billboard 200. Turn Blue (2014) gave them their first US number one. The band has won six Grammy Awards across categories including Best Rock Album and Best Alternative Music Album. By 2012 they had graduated to arenas, their Madison Square Garden debut selling out in fifteen minutes, and their raw, riff-driven live sound remains their calling card.
