Sleep

Sleep are an American stoner doom metal band from San Jose, California, formed in 1990, with bassist and vocalist Al Cisneros the only constant member. Volume One appeared in 1991 and Sleep's Holy Mountain in 1992; a conflict with London Records over whether the third album, Dopesmoker, was marketable broke the band up in 1998, and the record was finally released in its original form in 2003. Both are now acclaimed doom and stoner classics. Matt Pike formed High on Fire during the split; the band reformed in 2009 and surprise-released The Sciences in 2018. In 2026 a new line-up brought in Dale Crover and Bubba Dupree.
