Slayer are an American thrash metal band formed in Huntington Park, California, in 1981 by guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, drummer Dave Lombardo and vocalist-bassist Tom Araya. Alongside Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax, they became one of thrash metal's "big four", pushing the genre toward extreme speed and intensity. Their 1986 album Reign in Blood is widely regarded as one of the heaviest and most influential metal records ever made. The band earned two Grammy Awards for Best Metal Performance, for "Eyes of the Insane" and "Final Six". Renowned for ferocious, relentless live shows, Slayer staged a farewell tour in 2019 before returning for occasional festival appearances from 2024.
