James Taylor broke through in 1970 with "Fire and Rain" and had his first No. 1 the following year with Carole King's "You've Got a Friend". His 1976 Greatest Hits was certified diamond and has sold 11 million copies in the US alone. Every album he released from 1977 to 2007 sold over a million; his combined US album and single sales are certified at 33 million. A late resurgence brought Hourglass, October Road and Covers, and Before This World gave him a first US number-one album in 2015. A six-time Grammy Award winner, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and as of 2026 is still touring.
