The room
The Troubadour is a nightclub at 9081 Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, just east of Doheny Drive and the Beverly Hills line. Doug Weston opened it in 1957 as a 65-seat coffeehouse on La Cienega Boulevard and moved it to Santa Monica Boulevard in 1961, where its Monday night Hootenanny open mic — the Hoot — drew major-label executives to the front rows to scout. Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark and David Crosby met in the front bar in 1964 and became The Byrds; Elton John played his first United States show on the stage on 25 August 1970, introduced by Neil Diamond; Tom Waits was discovered at a Monday Hoot; and Guns N' Roses played the show that got them signed to Geffen on 28 February 1986. The Troubadour still works as a club stage for touring and breaking acts.
