The room
The Orpheum Theatre at 842 S. Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles opened on 15 February 1926 as the fourth and final Los Angeles house of the Orpheum vaudeville circuit, and a $3 million renovation begun in 1989 has left it the most restored of the city's historic movie palaces. Behind G. Albert Lansburgh's Beaux Arts facade the auditorium still holds the Mighty Wurlitzer installed in 1928 — one of three theatre pipe organs left in Southern California, and one the theatre calls the last great organ on Broadway. Sally Rand, the Marx Brothers, Will Rogers, Jack Benny and a young Judy Garland played here, billed with her family as Frances "Baby" Gumm, as did Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington; vaudeville ran as late as 1950 and the 1960s brought Little Richard, Aretha Franklin and Little Stevie Wonder. The house seats 1,976 across orchestra, mezzanine, balcony and boxes, and takes touring music, stand-up, movie premieres and location filming — Billy Strings, Jorja Smith, Gary Clark Jr., She & Him and Chelsea Wolfe alongside George Lopez, Daniel Sloss and Spanish-language bills from Edith Márquez and Hablando Huevadas.
