Frogmore Street

The room

Bristol's main mid-size touring room, on Frogmore Street in the city centre: 1,600 capacity in Academy 1 and 250 in the smaller Academy 2, run by Academy Music Group. The site opened in November 1966 as Mecca's New Entertainments Centre, a complex that held a dozen licensed bars, an ice rink, bowling lanes, the Craywood Club casino, a night club, a cinema and a ballroom with an illuminated ceiling. Most of it was demolished in 1998; the cinema closed in 1996, reopened as a nightclub called Rock in 2000 and soon became the Carling Academy, and O2 took over the sponsorship on 1 January 2009. It runs as an all-standing, free-flow room with a balcony.

What is the age limit at O2 Academy Bristol?

As standard most events run as 8+, and under-14s must be with an adult over 18. Anyone under 14 has to watch from the balcony rather than the floor. Individual shows can set their own limit, so the age restriction on the event page and on your ticket is the one that counts.

The venue publishes a doors time and a curfew on each event page, and the doors time is also printed on your ticket. It deliberately does not publish stage times, because they move — so treat the curfew as the outside edge of the night rather than expecting a set time for the headliner.

Can I take a bag into O2 Academy Bristol?

One small bag per person, no bigger than A4 — the venue gives the limit as 29.7cm high, 21cm wide and 15cm deep. Bags are checked on arrival and anything larger is refused, so leave the rucksack at home.

The venue has no car park of its own. There is on-street parking on Frogmore Street and St George's Road, and a drop-off point right at the entrance. Accessible bays are in the 24-hour Trenchard Street car park, which has lift access up to Frogmore Street.
