Bristol's main mid-size touring room, on Frogmore Street in the city centre: 1,600 capacity in Academy 1 and 250 in the smaller Academy 2, run by Academy Music Group. The site opened in November 1966 as Mecca's New Entertainments Centre, a complex that held a dozen licensed bars, an ice rink, bowling lanes, the Craywood Club casino, a night club, a cinema and a ballroom with an illuminated ceiling. Most of it was demolished in 1998; the cinema closed in 1996, reopened as a nightclub called Rock in 2000 and soon became the Carling Academy, and O2 took over the sponsorship on 1 January 2009. It runs as an all-standing, free-flow room with a balcony. East 17 were founded in Walthamstow in 1991 by Tony Mortimer, Brian Harvey, John Hendy and Terry Coldwell, and took their name from the postcode of their hometown.
