Newcastle University Student Union

Newcastle University Students' Union owns the building it occupies, unusually among students' unions in the United Kingdom: a neo-Jacobean hall built in 1924 with a gift from an anonymous donor believed to be Sir Cecil Cochrane, designed by the local architect Robert Burns Dick and opened on 22 October 1925; it was listed Grade II in 1987. In the basement is Venue, a nightclub and event space with room for 1,400 people; the building also holds the student bar, Luther's, and a modernist copper-clad extension designed by Sir William Whitfield. Maxïmo Park, Snow Patrol, Coldplay, George Ezra and The 1975 have all performed at the union.
