Newcastle University Students' Union owns the building it occupies, unusually among students' unions in the United Kingdom: a neo-Jacobean hall built in 1924 with a gift from an anonymous donor believed to be Sir Cecil Cochrane, designed by the local architect Robert Burns Dick and opened on 22 October 1925; it was listed Grade II in 1987. In the basement is Venue, a nightclub and event space with room for 1,400 people; the building also holds the student bar, Luther's, and a modernist copper-clad extension designed by Sir William Whitfield. Maxïmo Park, Snow Patrol, Coldplay, George Ezra and The 1975 have all performed at the union. Free Throw is an American emo band from Nashville, Tennessee, formed in 2012 and fronted by Cory Castro.
