1106 W Lawrence Ave
The room
Aragon Ballroom opened on 15 July 1926 at 1106 W Lawrence Ave in Chicago's Uptown, built by the brothers Andrew and William Karzas: architects Huszagh & Hill gave it a Spanish Baroque stucco exterior, and the movie-palace designer John Eberson decorated the inside to resemble the courtyard of a Moorish castle around a 21,000-square-foot dance floor. Regular dancing ended in 1964 and the hall went on to serve as a roller-skating rink, a boxing venue and a discothèque before returning to concerts; Live Nation has owned it since 2017 and books English- and Spanish-language pop and rock. The room accommodates up to 4,873 guests and stands one block from the Lawrence 'L' stop, and bands have been recording in it for decades — Metallica in 1986, Nirvana in 1993, Green Day in 1994, and Mastodon, whose Live at the Aragon was released in 2011.
