York Barbican is an indoor entertainment venue on Paragon Street at the southern end of York city centre, opposite the city walls, and is named after the nearby barbican attached to Walmgate Bar. It has a 1,500 seating capacity and a 1,900 standing capacity, and hosts live music, comedy and sport alongside business events and conferences. The current facility was built in 1989 by York Council at a cost of 15 million pounds, closed in 2004 after years of losses under council management, and reopened in spring 2011 after a 1.5 million pound refurbishment; it is still council-owned but commercially managed, by ASM Global and, as of 2025, Legends Global Services. It has been the host venue for snooker's UK Championship from 2001 to 2006 and again from 2011 onwards. Tom Bailey came to prominence in the early 1980s as the lead vocalist of the new wave band Thompson Twins, whose "Love On Your Side", "We Are Detective", "Hold Me Now", "Doctor!
