Melkweg (Dutch for 'Milky Way') is a nonprofit music and cultural centre near Leidseplein in Amsterdam. It opened in July 1970 in a former dairy building and became a year-round operation in 1973. The complex holds several performance spaces — including The Max (capacity around 1,500) and the Rabo Hall (around 1,400) — plus halls, a cinema and exhibition space, staging live music, film, theatre and exhibitions. U2 played their first concert outside Ireland and the UK here in 1980, and Nirvana performed in 1989. The Longest Johns are an a cappella folk group from Bristol, England, formed in 2012 after members sang together at a friend's barbecue.
