York Barbican is an indoor entertainment venue on Paragon Street at the southern end of York city centre, opposite the city walls, and is named after the nearby barbican attached to Walmgate Bar. It has a 1,500 seating capacity and a 1,900 standing capacity, and hosts live music, comedy and sport alongside business events and conferences. The current facility was built in 1989 by York Council at a cost of 15 million pounds, closed in 2004 after years of losses under council management, and reopened in spring 2011 after a 1.5 million pound refurbishment; it is still council-owned but commercially managed, by ASM Global and, as of 2025, Legends Global Services. It has been the host venue for snooker's UK Championship from 2001 to 2006 and again from 2011 onwards. Marillion are the British band who carried progressive rock through the 80s with Kayleigh and then pioneered crowdfunding, sustaining one of music's most devoted fanbases.
