An outdoor amphitheatre in Independence Township, Michigan, about 40 miles north-west of Detroit and named for the nearby Pine Knob ski area. Built by the Nederlander Organization and designed by Neumann/Smith, it opened on 25 June 1972 with a matinee by David Cassidy and was then the largest amphitheatre in the United States at 12,500 capacity; lawn expansion in the early 1980s took it past 15,000. It ranks among the top-selling outdoor concert venues in the world, was the DTE Energy Music Theatre for two decades from 2001, and is programmed by 313 Presents. Babymetal formed in Tokyo in 2010 as a sub-unit of the idol group Sakura Gakuin, built on the idea of fusing heavy metal with the Japanese idol genre, and became an independent act in 2013.
