Zaan Sonnekus

Zaan Sonnekus, born Cézaan Sonnekus in Bloemfontein, is an Afrikaans singer, songwriter and musician based in Pretoria. His passion for music started at the age of ten, when he received his first guitar, and storytelling came naturally from growing up in a creative family — his mother is both a writer and an artist. He describes his sound as “alternative rock with a soulful backbone”. His debut album, Zonneblom, was released in 2021, followed by singles including By Jou, SKREE, SPOED, Ryk Met Tyd with Barto and Gatvol with Droomsindroom. In 2026 DOOD, his collaboration with Tasché, and Waar Die Engele Rook both reached #1 on the Apple Music Afrikaans Chart, and the year also brought Oor Mekaar, a duet with Karlien van Jaarsveld, Lewe with Francois van Coke and Meisie Meisie with Kurt Darren.
