Third Eye Blind formed in San Francisco in 1993, and after years of line-up changes the songwriting pair of Stephan Jenkins and Kevin Cadogan signed the band's first major-label deal, with Elektra Records, in 1996. The self-titled debut arrived in 1997 with Jenkins on vocals and rhythm guitar, Cadogan on lead, Arion Salazar on bass and Brad Hargreaves on drums. Cadogan was let go in controversial circumstances shortly after Blue in 1999. Out of the Vein and Ursa Major followed with the guitarist Tony Fredianelli, and long gaps between records left Jenkins and Hargreaves as the band's remaining core.
