The Rascals, first known as the Young Rascals, formed in Garfield, New Jersey in 1965 around the lead vocalist and keyboardist Felix Cavaliere, the vocalist and percussionist Eddie Brigati, the drummer Dino Danelli and the guitarist Gene Cornish. Cavaliere and Brigati wrote most of the original material. Between 1966 and 1968 their blend of rock, pop and soul put nine singles into the top twenty of the Billboard Hot 100, three of them number ones — "Good Lovin'", "Groovin'" and "People Got to Be Free" — alongside "How Can I Be Sure?" and "A Beautiful Morning".
