The Matches are an American rock band from Oakland, California, formed in 1997 by schoolmates who first played as the Locals before adopting the name in 2002. Fronted by singer-guitarist Shawn Harris, they moved from straightforward pop-punk toward a more experimental, densely layered sound across three albums: E. Von Dahl Killed the Locals, 2006's Decomposer and 2008's A Band in Hope, their only Billboard 200 entry. Critics noted their idiosyncratic, ambitious direction, at times invoking Queen. The band went on hiatus in 2009 but reunited periodically from 2014 to mark album anniversaries, and the documentary Bleeding Audio chronicling their story premiered in 2020.
