About
The Chameleons are an English post-punk band formed in Middleton, Greater Manchester, in 1981 by Mark Burgess, Reg Smithies and Dave Fielding, later joined by drummer John Lever. Their atmospheric, echo-drenched guitar sound and lyrics about industrial decline and alienation set them apart across the albums Script of the Bridge (1983), What Does Anything Mean? Basically (1985) and Strange Times (1986), with Arctic Moon following in 2025. Long regarded as one of Manchester's most underrated 1980s groups, they are cited as an influence on bands from Oasis and The Verve to Interpol. Since reuniting around 2000 they have toured widely across Europe and North America, appearing at festivals such as Primavera Sound, their immersive live sound sustaining a devoted cult following.
