Sigur Rós are an Icelandic post-rock band formed in Reykjavík in 1994, named after frontman Jónsi's younger sister. Built around Jón Þór 'Jónsi' Birgisson's soaring falsetto and bowed-guitar textures, bassist Georg Hólm and keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson, they craft vast, ethereal soundscapes touched by classical and minimalist elements. On the 2002 album ( ) Jónsi sang in Vonlenska, or Hopelandic, a wordless invented language of pure syllables. Their breakthrough Ágætis byrjun (1999) drew international acclaim, followed by Takk... and Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust, with their latest album Átta arriving in 2023. Their music has featured in films and television including Vanilla Sky and the BBC's Planet Earth. Live, Sigur Rós are renowned for immersive, cinematic performances.
