Rebirth Brass Band are a New Orleans institution, formed in 1983 in the city's Tremé neighbourhood by tuba player Phillip "Tuba Phil" Frazier, his brother Keith, trumpeter Kermit Ruffins and schoolmates from Joseph S. Clark high school. They fuse traditional New Orleans brass-band music with funk, jazz, soul and hip hop, a sound documented across albums from 1984's Here to Stay! onward. In 2012 they won the inaugural Grammy for Best Regional Roots Music Album for Rebirth of New Orleans. The band is best known live for its long-running Tuesday-night residency at the Maple Leaf Bar, a pillar of the local scene, and for tireless touring across North America and Europe that has carried the second-line tradition worldwide.
