Protest the Hero are a Canadian progressive metal band formed in Whitby, Ontario, in 1999, known for intricate, technically demanding compositions fronted by vocalist Rody Walker. Their conceptual debut Kezia (2005) drew wide acclaim, and Fortress (2008) pushed further into virtuosic territory. In a landmark moment for crowdfunded music, they financed 2013's Volition independently through Indiegogo, nearly tripling their goal — the album won the 2014 Juno Award for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year. Later releases include Palimpsest (2020) and Within (2026). Founding guitarist Luke Hoskin shifted to a writing role in 2021, with the band drawing on session players live. Seasoned tourers, they are known for demanding sets that sometimes see them perform complete albums front to back.
