About
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is a New Orleans jazz band founded by tuba player Allan Jaffe in the early 1960s and named after Preservation Hall in the French Quarter, which Jaffe and his wife Sandra agreed to manage after visiting on their 1961 honeymoon. Allan Jaffe began touring with the Hall's bands in 1963, with players such as Sweet Emma Barrett, Kid Thomas Valentine, Percy and Willie Humphrey and George Lewis, and the band kept touring while Hurricane Katrina closed the Hall's doors in 2005. It has recorded with Blind Boys of Alabama and the Del McCoury Band, and in 2025 For Fat Man, with Preservation Brass, was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Regional Roots Music Album. The Hall is now directed by Ben Jaffe, son of the founders.
