About
The Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra is South Africa's national orchestra. It was constituted as a non-profit company in 2021 and officially launched in July 2022 by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture as the country's first national orchestra of the democratic era, with a board chaired by Justice Leona Theron of the Constitutional Court. It draws on 110 non-permanent musicians from provincial orchestras, universities and the freelance pool, and its mission includes supporting provincial and youth orchestras and helping to establish orchestras in provinces without one. Its fifth anniversary national tour takes Brahms's Violin Concerto and Saint-Saëns's Organ Symphony to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Gqeberha with the soloist Maxim Vengerov and the conductor Joseph Young.
