About
McCoy Mrubata is a South African jazz saxophonist, born in 1959 in Langa, Cape Town, where he grew up surrounded by African hymns — the sounds of the Zion churches, and the brassy Merry Macs band who rehearsed opposite his home. He started on flute, taught informally by Langa players including Madoda Gxabeka and Winston Ngozi, and came up through cover bands in the early 1980s until Sipho "Hotstix" Mabuse spotted him and helped him make Johannesburg his home. He signed to Zomba Records in 1988 and released his debut album, Firebird, the following year; he then formed Brotherhood with Jimmy Dludlu, and in 1992 joined Hugh Masekela's Lerapo. He has won the South African Music Award three times, for Face the Music, Icamagu Livumile and The Brasskap Sessions Volume 1.
