Karin Hougaard is an Afrikaans singer, writer, poet and painter who has been part of the Afrikaans music scene since winning the ATKV's Crescendo competition in 1980 as a sixteen-year-old student, and has released thirteen CDs. In the past few years she has concentrated on music theatre, including work with the Dutch performer Herman van Veen — The First Lady, a play about Jackie Kennedy, and Karin Hougaard Sings Queen. "Bij Mij", her composition with Anne van Veen from Hartstukke, was singled out in 2012 as one of the ten Dutch kleinkuns songs of lasting value. Her text "Kruietuin" is prescribed poetry for grade 11 Afrikaans learners and appears in the FAK songbook. She moved to the United States in 2009 and travels between Europe, the USA and South Africa to perform.
