Johnny Marr is an English guitarist and songwriter, born in Manchester in 1963, best known as co-founder, guitarist and co-writer of The Smiths from 1982 to 1987. After the band split he moved through The The, Electronic, Modest Mouse and The Cribs before launching a solo career in 2013 with The Messenger, followed by Playland (2014), Call the Comet (2018) and Fever Dreams Pts 1-4 (2022). The Guardian called him the 1980s' most inventive and distinctive guitarist; he received NME's Godlike Genius award in 2013 and has scored films with Hans Zimmer, including Inception and No Time to Die. A touring musician since the early 1980s, he plays festivals such as Glastonbury and remains a prolific, restless live performer.
