Emperor X is the project of American singer-songwriter Chad Randall Matheny, born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1979 and active since 1998. Working across lo-fi indie, noise pop and folk, he built a following on restlessly inventive, densely worded songs. A former high-school science teacher who left a physics master's to pursue music, Matheny drew wide attention with 2011's 'Western Teleport,' for which he buried 41 cassettes across North America in a geocaching stunt covered by NPR; in 2014 the design podcast '99% Invisible' commissioned him to write a song about nuclear-waste warnings. Later albums include 'Oversleepers International' (2017) and 'The Lakes of Zones B and C' (2022). Now based in Berlin, he tours regularly across North America, Europe and Australia, playing intimate, high-commitment solo shows.
