Ecca Vandal was born in Louis Trichardt, South Africa, to Sri Lankan Tamil refugee parents; the family left when she was a child and settled in Melbourne. She grew up on gospel music, found soul, hip hop and '90s R&B in her sister's record collection, became obsessed with jazz and studied it at the Victorian College of the Arts. Her debut single "White Flag" came in 2014 and she played Splendour in the Grass in 2015; her self-titled debut album followed in 2017, with "Price of Living" featuring Dennis Lyxzén of Refused and Jason Aalon Butler. Looking for People to Unfollow was released on 22 May 2026.
