The Lion King is a stage musical based on the 1994 Walt Disney Animation Studios film, with a book by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi. Julie Taymor directed it and put actors in animal costumes alongside giant, hollow puppets; the mandrill Rafiki became a female role because Taymor observed the film had no leading female character. Songs from the film by Elton John and Tim Rice sit alongside new ones from Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Tsidii Le Loka, Taymor and Hans Zimmer. Disney Theatrical Productions opened it at the Lyceum Theatre on 19 October 1999, where it has since passed 10,000 performances.
