The room
The Deaf Institute is a music venue and bar at 135 Grosvenor Street in Manchester. Its Music Hall is a 260-capacity room with a domed ceiling, a massive mirror ball, velvet curtains, tiered seating, a mezzanine, large windows, a bar down one wall and parrots on the wallpaper, and takes live shows, club nights and film screenings; below it, The Den is a plush 60-capacity basement bar with its own private bar, used for parties, receptions and small club nights. Both rooms can be hired day or night, seven days a week, with a dedicated event manager and full production. The venue itself is open only during events.

Frequently Googled
What is the capacity of The Deaf Institute?
260 in the Music Hall, the main room with the enormous mirror ball, and 130 downstairs in The Lodge. Two very different nights out: the Music Hall takes established touring bands, The Lodge is where a band plays its first UK tour.
Which room is my gig in at The Deaf Institute?
Check the ticket — the building holds three. The Music Hall is the 260-capacity live room, The Lodge is the 130-capacity room, and The Den is the space kept for club nights and private events. There are three bars across the floors and two terraces out the back.
Is The Deaf Institute wheelchair accessible?
Regrettably not. The building is Grade II listed and both the Music Hall and The Lodge are reached by stairs, and the toilets are not wheelchair accessible either. Staff will help people up and down the stairs where it is safe to do so. Email access@thedeafinstitute.co.uk after buying a general admission ticket to go on the access list.
Is The Deaf Institute standing or seated?
Standing for almost everything, with a little bleacher-style seating on both floors. If standing is difficult, the venue will reserve you a space — first come, first served and subject to availability — once you are on the access list.
What is the age limit at The Deaf Institute?
14 and over for all gigs, unless a particular show says otherwise. Club nights and anything with a different age policy will be flagged on the event itself.
Can I take a bag or a camera into The Deaf Institute?
Anything bigger than a clutch handbag goes into the cloakroom, along with overcoats, for the usual fee — and the head door supervisor has the final word on what counts. Cameras are more relaxed than most: 35mm and small digital cameras are fine at most shows, but not professional bodies with a detachable zoom lens, and some promoters ban photography outright.
Why is it called The Deaf Institute?
Because that is exactly what the building was. It dates to 1878 and was originally the Deaf Institute; the music venue reopened it just over a decade ago and kept the name. You will find it at 135 Grosvenor Street, M1 7HE, just off Oxford Road in the middle of the Manchester Metropolitan University campus.
Is there parking at The Deaf Institute?
None on site. The nearest car park sits directly behind the venue, at 136 York Street, M1 7XN.
