The room
Thalia Hall is a live-music venue inside an 1892 Romanesque Revival landmark at 1807 South Allport Street, on the corner of 18th and Allport in Chicago's Pilsen neighbourhood. The saloonkeeper John Dusek built it as one property carrying commercial storefronts, residential housing and a public hall for the neighbourhood; the architects Frederick Faber and William Pagels completed it in 1892, and the venue says they modelled the hall on the Prague opera house. It was designated a Chicago Landmark on 25 October 1989. Closed to the public in the 1960s and left virtually untouched, the building came back into use in September 2013, when Bruce Finkelman and Craig Golden launched three concepts inside it, among them a public hall fit for all types of events; they run it through their Chicago group 16" on Center alongside the Empty Bottle and The Salt Shed. Shows are general admission and standing on the main floor unless advertised as seated, the balcony is always seated, and the original 1892 design's four large opera boxes of six and two small opera boxes of two sit on either side of the proscenium stage and are sold as whole boxes. The box office opens on any night with a show from the time doors open, and from 10am to 1pm every Friday. The hall is also hired for private events, seating 160 at round tables or 220 at farmhouse tables and holding 900 for a reception, and the same building houses the Punch House cocktail bar in the basement, the Tack Room cocktail bar and piano in a corner that once stabled Dusek's horses, and the Mexican seafood restaurant Mariscos San Pedro. Our 42 listings for the room between 19 September and 13 December 2026 run to indie rock, folk, soul and jazz with stand-up alongside it — Arlo Parks, Osees over two nights, John Scofield, Tank and the Bangas, The Tallest Man On Earth, Jamila Woods, Temples and Kyle Kinane over two nights.
